George Partridge Bradford notebooks, 1827-1873.

Four volumes, 1827-1873, containing Bradford's notes as a student at Harvard Divinity School, garden records, travel records, teaching records and personal finance. The earliest volume (1827; begun Apr. 24; cover title "Notes on the Epistles") consists entirely of student notes. The next volume (1828, 1832-1839) consists of notes on religious topics, the Bible, the church fathers, and early church history, some passages copied from Bradford's readings, and diary entries recorded at Plymouth and Bangor. Lists of texts and subjects for sermons and of reading matter. (Cont.) are found at the end of the later volume. The 1839-1863 volume, Bradford's journal of vegetable planting (1844-1846, 1861-1863), mentions chemistry of agriculture, various vegetables, manuers, recipe to remove grease, journey to Center Harbor, N.H. (1839), and lists expenses for travel from Boston to several towns of Mass. and N.H. (includes pencil sketch of Profile Rock, Franconia, N.H.). The 1858-1873 volume contains Bradford's teaching records, 1858-1866, and his personal finance records, 1858-1873. Teaching records include terms taught, places. (Cont.) (Concord, Dorchester, and Salem, Mass. and Newport R.I.), students (includes some private lessons, Una Hawthorne named, 1861), and payments. Personal finance records include general expenses, statements of stock, monies received, borrowed, and paid, and U.S. Income Tax deductions and payments. Also, brief mention is made to: Mr. Alcott's conversations (1862-1863), John Garrison (1863), and journey to Mt. Washington area of N.H. (1867).

Teacher; member of Brook Farm community; friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Born in Boston, Mass., Feb. 16, 1807. Direct descendant of Gov. William Bradford; son of Gamaliel and Elizabeth (Hickling) Bradford; brother of Sarah Alden (Bradford) Ripley (Mrs. Samuel Ripley). Died in Cambridge, Mass., Jan. 26, 1890.
